Why Dry Eye Is Worse in Florida: Fans, AC, Sun and Screens

blog image

Patients are often surprised that dry eye is a problem in a humid state. But dry eye is about the tear film, not the weather report, and daily life in Florida puts that film under constant attack.

The local culprits

  • Air conditioning running most of the year, which strips humidity indoors
  • Ceiling fans, especially over the bed, blowing across the eyes for eight hours a night
  • Car vents aimed at the face during the commute
  • Bright sun and wind on the water, which increase evaporation and squinting
  • Screens, which cut your blink rate by a large margin
  • Seasonal allergies, which add inflammation on top of dryness

Why it is not only about moisture

A healthy tear film has three components: an oily outer layer from the meibomian glands in the eyelids, a watery middle layer, and a mucin layer next to the eye. Most chronic dry eye involves the oil layer. When those glands clog, tears evaporate too quickly, no matter how much water you drink.

This is why artificial tears alone can feel like they stop working. They replace volume, not oil.

What tends to help

  • Redirect fans and car vents so air is not blowing at your face
  • Warm compresses on the lids, done consistently rather than occasionally
  • Preservative-free artificial tears if you are using drops more than a few times a day
  • Wraparound sunglasses outdoors, particularly on the water
  • Deliberate blinking breaks during screen work
  • Treating allergy symptoms rather than rubbing your eyes

When it is time to be evaluated

If your eyes burn, feel gritty, water excessively or your vision blurs and then clears when you blink, an evaluation is worthwhile. Paradoxically, watery eyes are often a dry eye symptom: irritation triggers a reflex flood of tears that lack the oil needed to stay put.

In-office treatment options go well beyond drops, and our dry eye page covers what we offer. Dry eye also matters before cataract or LASIK surgery, because an unstable tear film affects measurements.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to stop wearing contacts?

Not necessarily. Lens material, wearing time and lens care all matter, and many patients do better with daily disposables. Our optometrist can adjust the plan.

Are redness-relief drops okay to use?

Drops marketed for redness constrict blood vessels and can cause rebound redness with regular use. They are not a treatment for dry eye.

Can dry eye affect my vision?

Yes. A poor tear film blurs vision, especially while reading or driving at night, and the blur often clears briefly after a blink.
